SC1166 |
Stampless Due 5 cover with the "Hardeeville (SC) Jany 17 (1862) Due 5"
manuscript postal markings. Early CSA Hardeeville covers are in
manuscript. The Hardeeville postmark did not come into use until later
in 1862. Addressed to Mrs. Daniel Crawford, Columbia, So. Ca. Endorsed
at left "Dan'l Crawford QM (Quartermaster) 15th Regiment SCV." This
is a heavy linen lined envelope which was used at the time for security
mainly to send cash through the mail. Most likely the soldier was
sending some money home to his wife. Small amount of edge staining at
the top right and a little top edge wear. Very clean cover and an
excellent example of a "Money Letter" envelope. |
