SC1144 |
CSA #4 Stone 2 (not plated) (4-Margin) tied by the large single rim Charleston SC CDS 20 JUN (1862). Addressed to Col Joseph Abney, Charleston Hotel, Charleston SC. Cover is an Overpaid Drop Letter as the postmark and the address are the same city. This is also a linen lined envelope used to send cash through the mail.
The linen lining on the inside on the envelope prevented the banknotes
inside the cover from being seen through the paper to reduce the chance
of theft. Very Fine.
Joseph Abney
(1819-1870) was the first Captain of Co A 22nd SC Inf and
then Colonel of the regiment until he was dropped in May 1862. Later, he
was Major of the 1st
Batt SC Sharpshooters and then Major of the 27th SC Inf.
He was severely wounded at Drewery's Bluff in May 1864 and died as a
direct result of his wounds in 1870. |
