CSA #11c (AD) Greenish-Blue (4-Margin) tied by the small double circle Spartanburg SC CDS 22 OCT 1863. Full Military Address to Lieut Edward J. Dean, Co C 22nd S C Regt, Evans Brigade, Charleston, South Carolina.
Period receiving docketing in pencil at top center says that the cover
was received at Charleston 25 OCT 1863. Very coarse brown paper cover
which appears homemade. Very Fine.
The
Edward Jefferson Dean
(1842-1885) correspondence is well known as this is the correspondence
that contains most of the known covers with the rare Spartanburg
provisional adhesive with letters written to him by his sister. The
provisional
covers in 1861 identify him as a Corpl in the Spartan Rifles Co K 5th SC Inf.
This 12 month regiment disbanded in April 1862, and Corpl Dean
apparently re-enlisted in the Palmetto South Carolina Sharpshooters as
did many other members of the disbanded regiment. By the time of this
cover, he was commissioned a Lieut in Co C 22nd SC Inf and
later promoted Captain of the company. Capt Dean was captured as a POW
while leading his company at the Battle of the Crater (7/30/1864)
during the Siege of Petersburg and remained in captivity at Fort
Delaware until the end of the war. Capt Dean's brother was Lieut Col
John Mills Dean (1835-1862) of the 7th Ark Inf who was killed-in-action at the Battle of Shiloh while commanding his regiment. |
