CSA #4 (very likely Stone 3 but cannot accurately plate the stamp) (margin just in at the bottom) tied by the BLUE Columbia SC
CDS 5 JUN (1862). Light coarse paper cover addressed to Mrs. S. S.
Crittenden, Greenville SC. Minor back flap opening tear and a little
light foxing. Still a very clean appearing cover.
The
addressee, Eliza Jane Lynch Crittenden (1838-1865), was the wife
of Stephen Stanley Crittenden (1829-1911) who is listed on the
Census of 1860 as a Greenville County SC fairly wealthy farmer (planter).
S. S. Crittenden entered Confederate service as 1st Lieut of Co G 4th SC Inf
2/1/1861. He is listed as wounded at Seven Pines (Va) 6/1/1862 which
ended his field service. On 11/5/1862, he was commissioned as Lt Col of
the 3rd SC Reserve Infantry.
After the war, he served in the South Carolina State House of
Representatives and in the South Carolina State Senate (1870-1880), and
was the postmaster of Greenville SC 1885-1890. On 5/11/1911 at age 82,
which was not long after the death of his second wife, he committed
suicide in Greenville by a pistol shot to the forehead. |
