SC1114 | Stampless cover with the large single rim Charleston SC CDS and handstamp PAID 10 Type G 4 SEP 186- (1863). Addressed to James Hemphill Esq, Chester CH SC. State Imprint "State of South Carolina Executive Department"
(TypeS-SC-02). Period receiving docketing at left dates the cover
to 1863 and indicates that the cover was from Gov Bonham. Part of top
back flap missing, otherwise Very Fine Ex Kohn. Milledge Luke Bonham (1813-1890) was the Confederate Governor of South Carolina 1862-1864. He was a prominent pre-war politician and US Congressman and served as a Colonel in the Mexican War. He also attained the rank of Major-General of the South Carolina Militia and was appointed a Brig-Gen in the CSA Army in 1861 and fought with disinction at First Manassas. He resigned from the army when he won election as governor. He was reinstated as a Brig-Gen when he left office. After the war, he practiced law and was active in state politics. The address is not in the governor's handwriting and most likely was written by a secretary or an aide. |
