Stampless cover with the large single rim Charleston SC CDS and handstamp PAID 2 Type C 28 SEP 186- (1863). Cover dated to 1863 by period receiving docketing at top center. Military Address to Lieut R. Y. Dwight, Company "D" Sullivans Island SC. Sullivan's Island was part of the defenses of Charleston Harbor. The cover was treated as a Drop Letter. Small parts of back flaps missing, but a very clean appearing cover and an excellent postal use. Ex Kohn, Ex Bogg.
Richard Yeadon Dwight (1837-1919) initially served in the ranks as a Private and then a Lieutenant in Holcombe's Legion and the 1st SC Inf
before being appointed Assistant Surgeon in Confederate Service in
1862. Dr. Dwight
was an 1856 graduate of the South Carolina Military Academy (The
Citadel) in Charleston and saw extensive service throughout the war in
various positions including medical and as a line officer. At the
time of this cover, he was serving as a 2nd Lieut in Co D 1st SC Inf and assigned to Sullivan's Island. Later in 1864, he would serve as
Assistant Surgeon at the Convalescent Camp at Macon, Georgia. |
