CSA #12 (AD) affixed sideways (margins touch at left and bottom) with a Grid cancel and the marching Winnsborough SC
CDS to the left 9 OCT (1864). Period receiving docketing at the top
center dates the cover to 1864. Addressed to Dr. R. Y. Dwight,
Assistant Surgeon, Macon, Georgia. Very clean cover with a small sealed
edge tear at top left, two sealed top back flap tears, and very
slightly reduced at the right where opened. Ex Kaufmann.
Richard Yeadon Dwight (1837-1919) initially served in the ranks as a Private and then a Lieutenant in Holcombe's Legion and the 1st SC Inf
before being appointed Assistant Surgeon in Confederate Service. Dr.
Dwight was an 1856 graduate of the South Carolina Military Academy (The
Citadel) in Charleston and saw extensive service throughout the war in
various positions. At the time of this cover, he was serving as
Assistant Surgeon at the Convalescent Camp at Macon, Georgia. |
