SC1108 |
Stampless cover with the small double circle Columbia SC CDS and handstamp PAID 10 Type J all in BLUE 30 AUG (1863). The small double circle Columbia SC postmark is not seen all that often. Adversity use of a pre-war USA postal service imprinted envelope (not a Confederate imprinted envelope) with "POST OFFICE BUSINESS FREE" imprint at the upper right and "POST-MASTER"
printed for the address. Both the imprint and the "POST-MASTER" in the
address are lined through as cover not used for post office business.
Addressed to J. E. Hagood Esqr., Pickens CH, So. Ca. James E. Hagood
was the clerk of the circuit court at
Pickens CH, and his business correspondence is extensive. Small period
ink stain at the upper right with a small repaired erosion affecting
part of the imprint.
The
original letter remains with the cover from one J. H. Marshall. The
letter refers to an enclosed check and has an interesting statement
"Tell Lt Garvin that he will find the pocket book & papers of Dr.
Grant the prisoner in the lower part of the book case." |
