SC1101 |
CSA #16x1 Charleston SC 5c Blue
Provisional (shows almost all of the margin lines except for a small margin nick at left center) pen-cancelled and matching manuscript "Wideman's SC Nov 19th (1861)" at top left. From the Pettigrew Correspondence addressed to Mrs C. L. Pettigrew, Scuppernong, North Carolina. This cover represents an unauthorized use of the Charleston provisional stamp
from an obscure South Carolina town in the Abbeville District
approximately 170 miles from Charleston that was accepted as postage.
The provisional stamps were only to be used at the post office of
issue. There are only a small handful of covers recorded with the
Charleston provisional stamp used and accepted as postage outside of
Charleston. Clean cover slightly refolded at the top and with a sealed
edge tear at the top left which does not affect the manuscript postal
markings. Ex-Calhoun and illustrated on Page 81 in his book on
the Charleston provisionals.
The Pettigrews were a large and
very prominent plantation family in North Carolina but lost everything
after the war. The addressee, Jane Caroline (North) Pettigrew
(1828-1887), was the wife of Charles Lockhart Pettigrew (1816-1873).
His plantation was known as Bonarva located on Lake Phelps. C. L.
Pettigrew was an older brother of CSA General James Johnston Pettigrew
who commanded a division during Pickett's Charge and was then killed a
few days later while covering the army's retreat from Gettysburg. |
