Col
Andrew Baxter Springs (1819-1886) was a wealthy planter from the York
District SC near Fort Mill. The title of "Col: was honorary. He did not
serve in the 6th SC Inf but most likely was in Manassas Junction on
private business. Other covers in the Springs Correspondence show
him back home in Fort Mill SC in early 1862. The regiment was
raised from that district. Capt White, also from Fort Mill SC, was
a member of a prominent family and was either a friend, business
partner, or perhaps a relative of the addressee. The "Charge R. A.
S." refers to the addressee's older brother Richard Austin Springs.
John
M. White (1833-1877) was Capt of Co H beginning when the regiment was
organized in April 1861. He was later promoted Major (1863) and Lt Col
(1864). He is listed as wounded at Seven Pines (31 May - 1 June 1862)
but fought throughout the war surrendering at Appomattox. |
