SC1071 |
CSA #11c (AD) Greenish-Blue (stamp affixed upside down with margibn touching at the bottom but with a large sheet margin) tied by the smaller single rim Charleston SC CDS 14 DEC. This
Charleston
postmark was only very occasionally used in the Confederate
period. The postmarks more commonly used were the small double
circle or the
large single rim with yeardate and missing digit. This
pre-war
mark differs from the other more commonly used CSA single rim device in
that it is somewhat smaller than the CSA mark, has a different style of
lettering, and has no yeardate within the postmark. Only
about 40
covers are recorded where this pre-war Charleston postmark was used
from mid-1862 to mid-1864. Semi-Official
Imprinted Cover "Head Quarters 1st Military District, Department of
South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, Official Business" (CC WD-ZA-24). The entire imprint is lined through indicating private use of the cover. Military Address to Major Joseph Abney, 27th Regt So Ca Vol, James Island SC. James Island is in Charleston Harbor, so this arguably could be considered as an overpaid drop letter. Joseph Abney
(1819-1870) was first Captain of Co A 22nd SC Inf and
then Colonel of the regiment until he was dropped in May 1862. Later he
was Major of the 1st
Batt SC Sharpshooters and then Major of the 27th SC Inf.
He was severely wounded at Drewery's Bluff in May 1864 and died as a
direct result of his wounds in 1870. Part of top back flap torn away in opening, otherwise a Very Fine cover. |
