| SC1060 |
Group of three stampless covers from the same correspondence with the Yorkville SC postmark and handstamp PAID 5 Type B dated 6 DEC (1861), 17 DEC (1861), and 26 DEC (1861). All three with Military Address to Lieut I. D. Witherspoon, Co A 12th Regmt SCV Care of Col Dunovant, Pocotaligo (SC).
The covers are from Lieut Withspoon's wife, but there are no
enclosures. Lieut Issac Donnom Witherspoon (1833-1901) entered service
9/1/1861 as the 2nd Lieut of Co A 12th SC Inf.
The regiment joined the ANV in May 1862 as part of Gregg's Bridgade,
A.P. Hill's Division. Prior to that, the regiment was assigned to the
Department of South Carolina. From May 1862 on, the 12th SC Inf took
part in all the major actions of the ANV. However, records of SC
soldiers are notoriously sketchy. So there is no detailed record of
Lieut Witherspoon's activities, but he did survive the war. The 1860
census shows I. D. Witherspoon as a lawyer in York SC. Col Richard Gill
Mills Dunovant (1821-1898), mentioned in the address, was a physician and
a planter and was also a Colonel in the Mexican War. He commanded the
12th SC Inf from 9/1/1861 until his resignation 4/2/1862. He served in
the SC legislature 1864-1865. Very nice little grouping of covers. |
