SC1055 |
CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) (4-Margin) tied by the pre-war Charleston SC
smaller single rim postmark 3 NOV with an inverted day logo (1864 by
period docketing). This Charleston postmark was only very
occasionally used in the Confederate period. The postmarks more
commonly used were the small double circle or the large single rim with
yeardate and missing digit. This pre-war mark differs from the
other more commonly used CSA single rim device in that it is somewhat
smaller than the CSA mark, has a different style of lettering, and has
no yeardate within the postmark. Only about 40 covers are recorded
where this pre-war Charleston postmark was used from mid-1862 to
mid-1864. Addressed to Mrs. R. Y. Dwight Care of Dr. Henry
Ravenel, Black Oak PO SC. Routing directtion at lower left “Forward direct to Charleston.” Endorsed at top “R. Y. D. Asst Surg PACS (Provisional Army of the Confederate States).”
"R. Y. D." was Dr. Richard Yeadon Dwight (1837-1919) an 1859 graduate
of the Medical College of South Carolina. Dr. Dwight entered service
in November 1861 as a private in Holcombe's SC Cavalry Legion. By
1864, he was serving as an Assistant Surgeon. Light coarse brown
paper cover which appears to be homemade. Small edge and corner faults
and a minor reduction at the left. Very clean cover with a nice
stamp and a scarce postmark. |
