SC1030 CSA #11 (AD) (4-Margin) tied by the Robertville SC CDS 4 FEB (1864). Addressed to Mr. John W. Heidt, Box 420, Savannah, Georgia. Very Fine commericially made lady's type cover with embossed flowers on the backflap.

The addressee, John Wesley Heidt (1841-1909), was born in Savannah and served as a Sergeant in the Chatham Light Artillery, a local independent artillery unit raised in Savannah and assigned at this time to the Savannah defenses. The cover is from his girlfriend, Leila Villard (1844-1929), in Robertville SC whom he would marry later in 1864. The Heidt-Villard Correspondence is extensive and well-known as much of the correspondence is archived at the Georgia Historical Society. After the war, John W. Heidt became a Methodist minister in 1866 and served in various locations in Georgia including as president of several colleges and universities.
