SC1015 |
CSA #11 (AD)
(4-Margin but close on the right) tied by two strikes of the Admas Run SC
CDS with a DEC date. Cover from the well-known Middleton
Correpspondence addressed to Mr. William Middleton Care of Middleton
& Co., Charleston, S. Carolina. The cover is endorsed with
rank "Henry A.
Wise Brig Genl" and marked "Private."
The address is entirely in the General's hand. The original short one
page letter remains with the cover also entirely in the General's hand
and datelined "Adams Run
SC Dec 25th 1863" (Christmas
Day). Interestingly, the letter is written in the third person thanking
Mr. Middleton for a present of a leg of mutton. Writing letters in the
third person was often done at this time by people of prominence. Henry
A. Wise (1806-1876) was the immediate pre-war governor of Virginia and
served ably as a CSA Brig-Gen during the war. At the time of this
letter, Gen Wise was serving under Gen Beauregard in the Charleston
area. Very Fine cover and letter. |
