RR91 CSA #4 two singles very Light Milky Blue and very likely Stone 3 but not plated (4-Margin) with heavy pen cancels and the BLACK Fisherville VA C RR (Virginia Central Railroad) CDS to the right with a JUL (1862) date. Military Address to Dr. Casper C. Henkel Care Col Fulkerson, Surgeon of 37th Reg Va Vol, Gen Jacksons Army, Richmond, Va. Reduced a bit at the right where opened just into the second line of the address. Very clean and presentable cover. Ex-Hannen CSA Railroad Collection.

Casper Coiner Henkel (1835-1908), a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, served throughout the war as the Surgeon of the 37th Va Inf. After the war, he returned to his home in New Market, Va., where he practiced medicine for the rest of his life,

Samuel Vance Fulkerson (1822-1862), a Mexican War officer and a lawyer and circuit court judge from Estellville, Va., was Colonel of the 37th Va Inf beginning 5/28/1861. The regiment was part of Stonewall Jackson's Division command, and Col Fulkerson was a great favorite of Stonewall Jackson who was devastated when Col Fulkerson was killed. Col Fulkerson was mortally wounded at Gaines Mill (Va) 6/27/1862 and died the next day. This cover was posted some days after Col Fulkerson was killed.
