USA #26 (nice stamp) tied by the Cobham VA C RR (Virginia Central Railroad) CDS with a second strike of the same CDS at the left 4 MAY (1861) Virginia Independent State.
Small yellow lined lady's type cover addressed to Dr. John C. Gordon,
Exchange Hotel, Richmond, Va. Top back flap missing, top edge trimmed
just a little, and a very small edge tear at top left center.
Multiple pencil notations on the back from previous owners. Cover is unlisted in any catalog as a Virginia Independent State use and is a great rarity. Ex-Kaufmann, Ex-Hannen CSA Railroad Collection. CSA Certificate 2012 signed by Frank Crown.
Of
note is the fact that there is no year on the cover and no enclosure.
This railroad mark was also used pre-war. When the cover was submitted for
certification in 2012, the CSA Authentication Service did extensive
research on the addressee, Dr. John C. Gordon (1831-1919) from
Charlottesville. Research confirmed that the cover is from his future
wife whom he would marry in June 1861. Dr. Gordon was ordered to
Richmond in May 1861 and stayed at the Exchange Hotel awaiting
assignment as an Asst Surgeon of the 38th Va Inf. His
appointment to the regiment occured four days after this cover was
posted. The evidence was overwhelming that this cover is a May 1861
Virginia Independent State use. A good certificate with that conclusion
was issued. After the war, Dr Gordon returned to his medical practice
in Albemarle County. |
