RR87 CSA #7 Vert Pair affixed sideways (4-Margin but tight at the top right and with a little edge gum toning) tied by a full strike of the Bumpass VA C RR (Virginia Central Railroad) CDS with a second strike of the same CDS below the stamps MAR (1863). From the Blackford Correspondence to Launcelot M. Blackford Care Capt Chas M. Blackford, Judge Advocate, Lt Gen Longstreet's Corps, Petersburg (Va). Period receiving docketing at the right indicating the sender of the cover "Capt B. L. Blackford rec'd 10 MAR 1863 Ansr." All three of the Blackfords named on this cover were brothers. Longstreet is named with full rank as Lt Gen. Very minor light foxing at top right and a minor back flap opening tear, otherwise Very Fine. Ex-Werner, signed by Brian Green, Ex-Hannen CSA Railroad Collection. Old 1964 CSA Certificate signed by Shenfield.

Launcelot (Lancelot) Minor Blackford (1837-1914), an 1859 graduate of the University of Virginia, enlisted in the Rockbridge Artillery 9/2/1861. He was later commissioned as a Lieutenant and served for a time as an advocate in the military court system of Longstreet’s Corps. Later in 1864, he was transferred to the 24th Va Inf where he served as the adjutant. After the war, he was the principal of the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va.

Charles Minor Blackford (1833-1903), an 1855 graduate of the University of Virginia, entered service 5/13/1861 as Lieut of Co B 2n
d Va Cav and later in 1861 promoted Capt.  Beginning in December 1862, he served as a judge in the military court system of Longstreet's Corps and later in 1864 was assigned as an aide on the staff of Gen Cooper in Richmond. After the war, he was a bank president in Lynchburg, Va.

Benjamin Lewis Blackford (1835-1908), a graduate of the University of Virginia, was comissioned Lieut in Co G 11th Va Inf 5/25/1861 and later promoted Captain. He transfered to the CSA Engineer Dept and served as a engineer officer beginning in January 1862. After the war, he continued his profession as a civil engineer in Virginia.

The above are the three Blackford brothers named on this covers There were two additional brothers who served - Lt Col William W. Blackford (1831-1905) CSA Engineer Officer and Major Eugene Blackford (1839-1908) of the 5th Ala Inf.
