CSA #1 Stone 2 Position 40 (a dry printing with tight margins) tied by a weak strike of the Bumpass VA C RR (Virginia Central Railroad)
postmark 20 DEC (1861). A much better strike of the same postmark is at
the upper left corner. Addressed to Wm G. T. Nelson Esqr, Member of
House of Delegates, Exchange Hotel, Richmond, Virginia. Folded letter
which is an exceptionally clean cover. Ex-Hannen CSA Railroad
Collection.
The letter is very short signed by C. G. Coleman
(Clayton Glanville Coleman Sr - 1808-1872), an extremely wealthy
planter, thanking the addressee, William G. T Nelson delegate in the
Virginia State Legislature representing Louisa County 1861-1863, for
helping to secure a commission as Major of Virginia Volunteers for his
son C. G. Coleman Jr. The letter is datelined "Jerdone Castle Dec 18th 1861" which was the Coleman colonial plantation in Bumpass, Louisa County, Virginia.
Clayton
Glanville Coleman Jr (1840-1908) attended VMI (1856-1858) but did not
graduate. He did graduate from the Virginia Medical College in Richmond
in 1861. He entered service as Capt of Co G 23rd Va Inf
4/24/1861, promoted Major 12/16/1861, and Lt Col 4/15/1862. He resigned
10/10/1862 and accepted a commission as Asst Surgeon in the
Confederate Medical Department 4/8/1863 serving with Pickett's
Division. After the war, he served in the Virginia Legislature 1865 and
1867. He practiced medicine in Louisa County until 1871 when he gave up
the practice of medicine and became a civil engineer. He studied
engineering while at VMI. He worked in the West for the US Civil
Service as an engineer in New Mexico, New Orleans, and later Little
Rock where he died (1908) and is buried. |
