Immortal
600 POW Cover -- CSA #11 (AD) (4-Margin but close on the right) tied by
a somewhat smeared but identifiable strike of the Charleston SC
integral "Paid" CDS 6 OCT (1864). This Charleston integral "Paid"
postmark is pre-war and was only very rarely seen in the late
Confederate period. Addressed to Mrs. C. Byrd Eastham, Harrisonburg,
Rockingham Co., Va. At the left in the same hand as the address
"Via Flag of Truce to Charleston." Cover originated from Morris Island
from Lieut C. Byrd Eastham 10th Va Inf of the "Immortal 600" CSA POW's
held on Morris Island under fire. Very Fine. Extensive note on the back
signed by Van Dyk MacBride.
Chapman Byrd Eastham (1837-1865)
entered service as a private in Co G 10th Va Inf 4/18/1861. He was
commissioned 2nd Lieut 7/22/1862 and promoted 1st Lieut 5/3/1863. He
was captured as a POW at Spotsylvania Court House (Va) 5/12/1864 and
initially confined at Fort Delaware ending up on Morris Island in
Charleston Harbor as one of the Immortal 600 in August 1864. He was
transferred later in December 1864 to Fort Pulaski near Savannah where
he Died of Disease 3/7/1865 and is buried at the Fort Pulaski National
Monument Cemetery. |
