USA #65 with a Blue Target Cancel and the matching small double circle Blue Union Georgetown KY CDS to the left of the stamp 10 AUG 1863. Orange paper cover addressed to Col D. Howard Smith, Prisoner of War, Ohio State Prison, Columbus, Ohio. Manuscript "Examined W. A. Judkins A.D.C." (1st Lieut OVI) at the upper left corner. Not a through-the-lines cover.
Accompanying the cover is a 1971 letter from the then owner of the
cover to Earl Antrim asking Antrim if he thought the cover was genuine
as the Ohio State Prison was not in Antrim's book on Civil War Prisons.
The response from Antrim was that the cover was genuine and that much
new information has been discovered since he published his book. The
Ohio State Penitentiary is in the Harrison book as that is where the
prisoners from Gen John Hunt Morgan's 1863 raid into Ohio were
confined. Cover is somewhat reduced at the left where opened not
affecting anything. Very clean cover.

and confined at the Ohio State Penitentiary until exchanged. After his
exchange, he rejoined Morgan's command and surrendered 5/17/1865 at
Columbus, Miss. After the war, he had a career as a lawyer and
