USA #65 (very nice stamp) tied by a full Target Cancel with a second strike of the same target at the right and the Knoxville, Ten Union occupied double ring CDS 14 FEB 1865 (yeardate in the CDS). POW cover from late in the war but not through-the-lines. Addressed to Col William D. Mitchell Care of Col Scovill Supt. Prisoners, Block 4, Camp 8, Johnson Island, Ohio. On the reverse is the "Johnson's Island O Prisoner's Letter Examined G. S. B." (George S. Brown 128th OVI 11/5/1864 - 6/14/1865) (CC PWH-25 Type A). Very Fine.
William Dixon (Dickey) Mitchell (1839-1892), a lawyer by profession, entered service in 1861 as a Capt in the 29th Ga Inf.
He was wounded at Chickamauga 9/29/1863 losing an arm. He recovered and
later returned to his unit and was promoted Colonel of the regiment
1/19/1864. Col Mitchell was captured as a POW at the Battle of
Nashville, Ten., 12/15/1864 and confined at Johnson's Island until his
release 7/25/1865. After his release from prison, he returned to the
practice of law in Thomas County, Georgia, and also served as a county
judge beginning in 1879.
Union Lt Col Edward Alexander Scovill (1819-1890) of the 128th OVI
(Ohio Volunteer Infantry) was the Superintendent of Prisoner's at the
Johnson's Island prison at this time. From a prominent Cleveland
family, Lt Col Scovill spent his wartime service with the guard unit at
the Johnson's Island prison. |
