POW230 |
USA #65 (very nice 4-Margin stamp with a Target cancel and the matching Delaware City DEL CDS to the left 27 JAN (1864). North-to-South
through-the-lines POW cover from the Union prison at Fort Delaware to
Richmond, Va. "Per Flag of Truce Via Fortress Monroe" at the top. Addressed to Miss Sallie A Moohlar, Richmond, Va. Endorsed at the left "From A. E. Browne Co L 1st So Ca Rifles." Cover exchanged through Fortress Monroe and taken to Richmond where the Richmond, Va CDS Powell Type 6i was applied which ties the Union stamp 11 FEB (1864). In Richmond, the cover was treated as a Drop Letter and the "Due 2" handstamp Type N was applied to assess the CSA drop letter postage. Very Fine.
Alexander Evins Browne (1845-1902) is listed as a Private in Company L 1st SC Rifles (also known as Orr's Regiment)
but no details given. He was 18 in 1863 and enlisted well after the
regiment was formed. Company L was made up of men from the Anderson
District SC. The records of SC soldiers are basically terrible to
almost non-existent. Pvt Browne was most likely captured as a POW at
Gettysburg as the regiment took part in that battle as part of the ANV
2nd Corps. Most of the CSA enlisted prisoners captured at Gettysburg
were confined at Fort Delaware. Pvt Browne did survive the war as the
Federal Census of 1880 lists him as a farmer in Anderson County SC. No
information available on the addressee. Cover could benefit from
further research. |
