POW229 USA #65 (nice 4-Margin stamp) with a Target cancel and the double ring Sandusky, Ohio CDS to the left 30 NOV 1864. Addressed to Miss Georgia C. Woods Care of R. B. Cheatham Esqr, Nashville, Tenn. Cover is from a CSA POW at Johnsons Island (no endorsement) with the oval Johnson's Island Prisoner's Letter Examined G. A. R. handstamp (CC PWH-25 Type A). Cover is not through-the-lines as Nashville was Union occupied and only USA postage was required. "G. A. R." are the initials of the examiner identified as Pvt Gerald R. Ressap 128th Ohio Volunteers. This handstamp was used 11/25/1864-1/3/1865. The POW (Johnson's Island held captured CSA Officers) who sent the cover is not identified. R. B. Cheatham was Richard Boone Cheatham a former mayor of Nashville 1860-1862. Could not find a connection between the Woods and Cheatham families. Neat unsigned notation on the top back flap by an unidentified prior dealer. Cover certainly bears further research. Ex-John R. Hill. Very Fine. $250.00
