by W. & J. Bonitz, Goldsboro, N. C." Printed on rather coarse paper. The address is a little light but legible to Mrs. Sarah E. Wike, Newton NC, Catawba Co. A plated CSA #4 Stone 3 stamp on a Patriotic Cover is quite scarce. Very clean cover. Ex-Wiseman.
The cover was sent by Pvt William D. Wike (1836-1864) of Co K 46th NC Inf home to his wife Sarah Elizabeth Detter
Wike (b1838) whom he married in 1860. Pvt Wike, a farmer and
blacksmith, enlisted 3/13/1862. He is listed as deserted 8/19/1863 and
arrested for desertion 9/28/1863. He was subsequently returned to his
unit 1/30/1864. Details concerning the desertion are not recorded. He
is listed as wounded at The Wilderness 5/5/1864 and returned to his
unit 7/30/1864. He was killed at the Second Battle of Reames Station
(Va) 8/25/1864 during the Siege of Petersburg. |
