Soldiers stampless DUE Patriotic Cover with the Jefferson Davis Medallion (7-Stars) with Allegorical Scene in Black (Type JD-1A) with the small double circle Leesburg, Va CDS and handstamp "DUE 10" 14 NOV 1861.
Addressed to R. Tankersley Esqr, Sarepta, Miss. Sarepta, currently an
unincorporated area, was an obscure CSA post office in Calhoun County
in northen Mississippi. The "DUE 10" handstamp is not a Leesburg mark. The cover was routed through Memphis, Tenn., and the "DUE 10" handstamp applied in transit in Memphis (Type H) to assess the unpaid postage. Endorsed at bottom left "G. P. Tankersley private in company K 17th Miss Regiment." Cover
reduced a bit at the left just to the edge of the design with a very
well done and unobtrusive repair to the upper left corner not involving
the design. A very clean appearing and attractive cover. Ex-Matz.
George Patterson Tankersley (Tankersly) (1830-1873) enlisted as a private in Co K 17th Miss Inf
5/1/1861. He served throughout the war with his unit in Virginia and
surrendered and was paroled at Appomattox 4/9/1865. He was from a large
farming family in Calhoun County and sent this letter home most likely
to his brother, Rowland Tankersley. The 17th Miss Inf spent the
war in Virginia in the CSA Army of the Potomac and the ANV taking part
in all the major engagements from First Manassas through to Appomattox
where only 3 officers and 62 men were surrendered. The regiment had
very distinguished service thoughout the war. However, Mississippi
soldier's records are very sparse. There is no detailed record of Pvt
Tankersley's service other than that he was present throughout the war
and hospitalized in Leesburg in Nov-Dec 1861 (the time of this cover)
for illness. He had several other hospitalizations later in the war
also for illness and was detailed for a time as a Hospital Nurse. No
record of a promotion. The cause of his early death at 43 in 1873 is
not recorded. |
