CSA #1 Vertical Pair Stone 1
(not plated) (margin irregular at the top and pre-affixing faults
including a horizontal central crease on the lower stamp) tied by the Fredericksburg, Va CDS with integral PAID (this is the Fredericksburg postmark with "burg" in small letters) (date not fully apparent). Patriotic
Cover with the Large Mounted Dragoon design Type SM-1 with Verse ("To
arms! To arms! quick, be ready -"), Slogan 38 ("Forti Et Fideli Nil
Difficile") and Slogan 63 ("Remember Sumter, Bethel and Manassas"). The
stamps are affixed partially over the patriotic design. Addressed
to Mr. W.W. Gardner, Newsite, Ala. Cover shows a little edge and
corner wear at the upper right and some edge staining at the bottom
right which is more prominent on the reverse. Despite the stamp faults,
the cover still has quite a clean appearance and is very presentable.
The
Federal Census of 1860 lists William W. Gardner (b1808) of Newsite,
Alabama, as a farmer with two sons of military age. Unable to find any
other records on the family. Very possibly one of the sons was in an
Alabama unit in Virginia and sent the cover home to his father but
unable to verify this. There is also some confusion over the spelling
of the addressee's name -- Gardner vs Garner. Needs further research. |
