| PAT441 | Turned Patriotic Cover --
A turned patriotic cover is only very rarely encountered. Cover flapped
up from the bottom so that both uses are displayed as well as a good
display of the patriotic design. Very clean cover. First Use -- The side with the patriotic design which has been turned to the outside. Stampless PAID use with the Goldsborough NC CDS 7 JUL with handstamp PAID 10 Type C. Addressed to Capt D. Staley, Marleys Mills, Randolph County, N. Ca. Stars and Bars (10 Stars) Type F10-11 in Black with Verse 37 ("Stand by that flag, men of the South...". This design is usually seen with a Goldsboro Printer's imprint (Imprint 17) along the left edge. It appears that the imprint was cut off when the cover was refolded for the turned use. Second Use -- CSA #12c Greenish-Blue (AD) tied by the Rutherfordton NC CDS 2 SEP. Addressed to Col J. W. Staley, Troys Store (Randolph County) NC. The Staley family was prominent in Randolph County, North Carolina. There was no Col Staley that served in the Confederate Army, so the "Col" designation was most likely honorary or perhaps an old state rank. Unable to identify a Capt Staley in the Confederate Army so assume it was a state militia rank. Needs more detailed research on the Randolph County, North Carolina, Staley family. |
