CDS Powell Type 5a 11 JUN 1863.
Patriotic Cover with large Flag Over Cannon design (12 Star
Flag) Type CN-1C all in Black with Verse 13 (“Gather around
your
country’s flag,...”). Addressed to Mrs. Georgia Ann
Giles,
Howard PO, Georgia. The cover was sent by Sergt Hardy H. Giles (entered
service 5/8/1862) of Co F 59th Ga Inf home to his wife. The 59th Ga Inf
was an ANV unit in Hood's Division of Longstreet's Corps. Sergt Giles
was wounded in both thighs at Fussell's Mill (Va) 8/15/1864 during the
Siege of Petersburg and died of his wounds at the Jackson Hospital in
Richmond 8/17/1864 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery. Very minor
corner edge damage upper right and left and some very light water
staining which do not detract. Very attractive patriotic cover. |
