Rev Abner Johnson Leavenworth (1803-1869) was a prominent Presbyterian minister who established and operated schools in Petersburg (Collegiate Seminary for Young Ladies). The Leavenworth family correspondence is extensive. Rev Leavenworth's son, Capt Frederick P. Leavenworth (1833-1920), an engineer, was an Ordinance Officer on the staff of CSA Gen E. Kirby-Smith in Shreveport, La. Letters between Capt Leavenworth in Shreveport and his father in Petersburg account for a number of Trans-Missippi Express covers later in the war.
