CSA #82XU2 Stampless Thomasville, Ga., Handstamp PAID 5 Provisional 26 OCT (1861). Military Address to Capt W. D. Mitchell, Camp Lawton, Savannah, Ga. Period docketing below the address by the recipient showing that the letter was answered Oct 28th / 61. Exceptionally clean cover. Minor reduction at the left where opened not affecting anything. Ex-Kaufmann. William Dickey Mitchell (1839-1892) entered service 10/1/1864 as Captain of Co G 29th Ga Inf. He was promoted Lt Col 5/10/1862 and Col of the regiment 1/19/1864. He is listed as wounded at Chickamauga 9/19/1863 losing an arm, and captured as a POW at Nashville 12/15/1864. He was confined at Johnson's Island until released 7/25/1865. After the war, he practiced as a lawyer in Thomasville, Georgia. Could find nothing on a Camp Lawton near Savannah in 1861. May have been a short-lived Camp of Instruction.
