William Lafayette Scott (1829-1872), a lawyer by profession, entered service as Capt of Co M 21st NC Inf
and promoted Lt Col 2/1/1862. He was discharged from service 4/26/1862 and returned home to Greensborough.
No further record. The advertising is from his law firm.

Whedbee Kirkland (1833-1915) attended West Point but did not graduate.
Just prior to the war, he was a 2nd Lieut in the USMC resigning in
August 1860. He was elected Colonel of the 21st NC Inf in June 1861. He served with distinction throughout the war with the ANV rising to the rank of Brig-Gen in August 1863. Gen
Kirkland was wounded three times - 1) First Battle of Winchester May
1862, 2) Battle of Bristoe Station October 1863, 3) Near Gaines Mill
during the Overland Campaign June 1864. After the war, he was a
merchant in Savannah and later relocated to New York City where he held
a position in the Post Office Department. |
