CSA #12c (AD) Greenish-Blue (three large margins with an irregular margin on the left) tied by the BLUE Greensborough NC CDS 2 JAN (1864). Imprinted cover "Chief Enrolling Office, 6th Congressional District, Greensborough, N. C." at the upper right and "Official" at the upper left (WD-CN-15). Coarse brown paper cover with Military Address to Capt T. A. Martin, Asst En(rolling) Officer, Wilson NC. Very clean cover.
Thomas A. Martin (b1841), a school teacher, entered service as a private in Co E 13th NC Inf 5/8/1861.
He was promoted through the ranks and commissioned 3rd Lieut 4/26/1862,
1st Lieut 6/23/1862, and Capt 11/17/1862. He is listed as wounded in
the left hip at Gettysburg (Seminary Ridge) 7/1/1863 and furloughed to
recover from his wound. He was detailed as an Enrolling Officer in
North Carolina because of his wound in November 1863 until he rejoined
his regiment in July 1864 and was promoted Major 1/19/1865. He
surrendered with his unit at Appomattox 4/9/1865. No further
information. |
