NC963 Two covers from the Correspondence of Lieut Charles C. Carmichael 30th Va Inf both from Greenborough NC. Both covers addressed in the same handwriting. These covers belong together and will be sold only as a pair.

1) CSA #4 Horz Pair Stone 3 Position 46-47 (margin just touches at the top left) tied by the BLUE Greensborough NC CDS with a second strike of the same CDS to the right of the stamps dated 9 JUL (1862). Military Address to Lieut Charles C. Carmichael, Col Arcie Harrisons Regt 30 Va Vol, Chester Depot, Chesterfield Co., Va. Very nice cover with just a little staining at the left lower corner.

2) Stampless PAID cover with a partial strike of the BLUE Greensborough NC CDS (date not fully apparent) and matching BLUE handstamp PAID 10 Type D. Military Address to Lieut Charles C. Carmichael, Col Archie Harrisons Regt, Co C, 30 Va Volunteers, Petersburg, Va. Very clean cover which appears to be homemade with back flap opening tears.

Charles Carter Carmichael (1839-1905), a member of the prominent Carmichael medical family of Fredericksburg, Va., enlisted as a private in Co C 30th Va Inf 5/23/1861 and was elected 1st Lieut 12/2/1861 and served thoughout the war with his company. After the war, he returned home to Fredericksburg and was a bookkeeper for the National Bank of Fredericksburg. His papers are at the Virginia State Library and consist mostly of wartime letters from his mother in Danville, Va. Lieut Carmichael's father, Dr. George F. Carmichael, was a CSA Army Surgeon assigned to the Military Hospital at Danville, and his wife was with him. These covers are presumed to have been addressed by Lieut Carmichael's mother as Danville and Greensborough were less than 50 miles apart and connected by train (Richmond and Danville Railroad).

Archibald Taylor Harrison (1829-1889) attended VMI but did not graduate. He entered service as the Lt Col of the 30th Va Inf 6/13/1861 and promoted Col of the regiment 4/19/1862. He retired from service 11/5/1864 because of an injury. After the war, he farmed in Prince George County, Virginia.
