NC962 CSA #32XU1 Stampless Greensborough NC PAID 10 Provisional with Postmark and Rate/Control mark all in RED 31 JAN (1865). The postmark is a somewhat weak but still recognizable strike. The Rate/Control mark is a much better strike. Military Address to Mr. John Glass, Pocotaligo SC, 6th NC Ser Reserves, Col Shobers Regiment. Cover slightly refolded along the bottom and the right side and with a small reduction at the left where opened. A clean appearing cover with a 1991 CSA Certificate. Cover is also listed on the Crown Provisional Census. Ex-Matz, Ex-Agre.

The unit in the address is incorrect. It should be the 7th NC Senior Reserves commanded by Col Charles Eugene Shober (1833-1892), a lawyer from Guilford County NC. He entered service as Capt of Co B 45th NC Inf and promoted Major in Sept 1862. He had later service as Lt Col 2nd NC Batt Inf. Some time in late 1864 when the unit was organized, he became the Colonel of the 7th NC Senior Reserves Inf (later designated as the 77th NC Inf) which served in SC in early 1865 to the end of the war. The unit history of the 7th NC Senior Reserves positively dates this cover to January 1865. No information on the addressee, John Glass. There were two soldiers, probably related, listed on the roster of the unit as "J. Glass," one a Lieut and one enlisted.
