CSA #12a (AD) Milky Blue (4-Margin) with the small single rim BLUE Concord NC CDS
18 SEP. Addressed to Dr. J. G. Ramsey, Rowan Mills, N. Carolina. Period
receiving docketing at the left "Dr Bingham" indicating the name of the
sender. Small piece missing from bottom back flap. Very clean appearing
cover and a very nice stamp.
James Graham Ramsay (1823-1903), an
1848 graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, practiced
medicine in Rowan County NC for 51 years. He was also active in
politics serving as the first president of the Rowan County Medical
Society (1849), the NC State Senate (1856-1864), and the Second
Confederate Congress (1864-1865).
Lucius S. Bingham (1822-1871)
(the sender) practiced medicine in Concord NC and served as the mayor
of Concord (1853-1855 and 1865-1866). He also served briefly as a
line officer in 1861 (Lieutenant in Co A 29th NC Inf). Dr. Ramsay and Dr. Bingham do not appear to be related. |
