Stampless cover with a partial strike of the Goldsborough NC CDS 13 JU- and handstamp small "10". There
is no PAID or DUE notation and no soldier's endorsement. Presumably
sent as a PAID cover as the small "10" is catalog listed as part of the
Type B handstamp. The Type B catalog listing has a handstamped PAID
while ths cover is missing the PAID handstamp. The Type B is an "Unspported"
listing. The small "10" by itself is not catalog listed at all. Light
coarse paper cover addressed to Capt W. S. G. Andrews, Fort Johnston
via Wilmington NC. Very clean cover.
Fort Johnston located near
the mouth of the Cape Fear River was an old fort dating back to the
Revolutionary War. Fort Johnston is not a post office. Note that the
cover was addressed to a fort through the Wilmington NC post office. By
the time of the Civil War, Fort Johnston was quite dilapidated and was
used as a center for recruitment and training of North Carolina
soldiers and as a supply depot. The fortifications were increased
during the war for the protection of blockade runners.
William
Sewell Goodhue Andrews (1819-1878), a merchant from Goldsborough, early
in the war raised an artillery company and was commissioned Captain of
Co F 1st NC Light Artillery 6/24/1861 and was promoted Major of
Infantry and placed in command of Fort Hatteras 7/20/1861. He was
captured as a POW 8/29/1861 when the fort was taken by the Union,
confined at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor, and later exchanged
1/15/1862. He was assigned as an enrolling officer in Johnston County
NC 12/12/1863 but resigned 3/8/1864 due to ill health. After the war,
he engaged in business in Wilmington. This cover would date in June or
early July 1861 prior to his promotion and prior to taking command at
Fort Hatteras. Very likely his company was in training at Fort Johnston
in June 1861. The cover must have been overweight to account for the
10c rate. |
