Type C. Addressed to Mrs. L. E. Myers, Germanton, Stokes Co. NC.
Sealed back flap opening tear, period ink stain to the left of
the postmark, light edge staining at left. Still quite a presentable
cover.
The addressee, Laura Elizabeth Myers (1826-1884), was the
wife of Addison C. Myers (1830-1916) who is listed as a prosperous
farmer in Stokes County NC on the Federal Census of 1860. He
mustered into Co D 52nd NC Inf as a private 4/28/1862 and
promoted 1st Sergt 5/28/1862. Sergt Myers was wounded and captured as a
POW at Gettysburg 7/3/1863 (Pickett's Charge, Heth's Division,
Pettigrew's Brigade) and hospitalized in Baltimore until paroled and
exchanged in November 1863. On 8/18/1864, he transferred into the
Veterans Reserve Corps. His name is mispelled on the army records as
"Anderson C. Myers" instead of "Addison." He is listed on the Federal
Census of 1880 as a tobacconist in Germanton NC. |
