NC947 Stampless Soldiers DUE cover with the Goldsborough NC CDS 24 JAN (1863) (inverted month) and manuscript "Due 10". The "Due 10" manuscript is listed as "Unsupported" in the CSA Catalog. This cover certainly supports the listing. Addressed to Mr. R. G. Lindsay, Greensboro NC. Endorsed at top left "Lieut J. A. Lindsay Co K 45th NCT". Very clean cover.

John Austin Lindsay (1842-1868), an 1861 graduate of Davidson College, entered service as 1st Lieut of Co K 45th NC Inf 4/14/1862 and promoted Captain 6/18/1863. At the time of this cover, the unit was assigned to the Deparment of Southern Virginia and North Carolina before transferring to the ANV in May 1863. Capt Lindsay is listed as wounded at Gettysburg 7/1/1863 during the fighting on the first day of the battle. After the war, he engaged in the lumber business and was killed in a nasty freak sawmill accident near Memphis, Tennessee, in 1868. The addressee, Robert G. Lindsay, was Lieut Lindsay's father.
