Soldiers DUE cover with the Goldsborough
NC CDS 7 APR (1862) and manuscript "Due 5"
revalued "Due 10". The manuscript "Due 10" is
listed as "Unsupported" in the CSA
Catalog. The manuscript revaluation "Due 5" to "Due
10" is not cataloged. Cover from the Cobb Correspondence
addressed to Col John B. Lamar, Macon, Georgia. Endorsed at top right "John
A. Cobb Aide-de-Camp".
Goldsborough was the headquarters for the Confederate Military
Department of North Carolina. A little light staining at the top and
top right.
Colonel
John Basil Lamar (1812-1862), a Georgia politician and a wealthy
Georgia planter, served as a staff officer (Voluntary
ADC) to
his brother-in-law Brig-Gen (later Maj-Gen) Howell Cobb. Col Lamar was
mortally wounded at the Battle of Cramptons Gap (part of the Battle of
South Mountain, Maryland) 9/15/1862 and died of his wounds the next day.
Lieut
John Addison Cobb (1838-1923), a graduate of the University of Georgia,
served in early 1862 as an ADC to his father, Brig-Gen (later Maj-Gen)
Howell Cobb resigning in September 1862. |
