Stampless
PAID over DUE cover with
the Goldsborough NC CDS 15 JUN (1864) and two
strikes of the handstamp DUE 10 Type E. The Due 10
handstamps are lined through and the cover revalued
with the handstamp PAID Type A (two strikes) with
one manuscript "10".
Addressed to Mrs. Martha H. Jeffreys, Dunnsville, Wake County NC. This
PAID over DUE revaluation use is listed in the Confederate Catalog but
is listed as "Unsupported". This cover certainly
supports the
listing. There is a short manuscript pencil notation
at the
top right which cannot be fully deciphered because of fading. It does
not appear to be a military endorsement but instead appears to be from
Goldsborough indicating that the cover was paid. Minor reduction at the
right not affecting anything and a minor corner fault at the upper
right.
The addressee, Martha Hart Jeffreys (1840-1896) from a
prosperous farming family in Wake County NC, had two sons who served in
the 3rd NC Cav. Thomas J. Jeffreys (1843-1864)
enlisted in Wake County as a Corpl (later promoted Sergt) in Co I
3rd NC Cav
2/12/1862. He is listed as captured as a POW at Hanover CH (Va)
5/31/1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Md., where he Died of Disease
7/17/1864 and is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Point Lookout.
William A. Jeffreys (1844-1892) enlisted in Wake County as a private in
Co I 3rd NC Cav 6/20/1863 and served for the
remainder of the
war. Pvt Jeffreys is the most likely sender of this cover home to his
mother and would date the cover to March 1864 as that is when the
regiment was in North Carolina. |
