Stampless PAID cover with a full strike of the Goldsborough NC CDS 30 MAR (1863) with handstamp PAID 10 Type C. Addressed to C. H. Wiley Esq, Supt of Com(mon) Schools of NC, Raleigh NC. Receiving docketing on the back dates the cover to 1863. Back flap opening tears, otherwise a very clean cover. The addressee, Calvin H. Wiley (1819-1887), was an 1840 graduate of the University of North Carolina and was admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1841. He held the position of the first North Carolina Superintendent of Public (Common) Schools of North Carolina 1853-1865 during which he established the modern system of public education in North Carolina. He was also a popular novelist of his time writing about North Carolina themes, history, and traditions.
