NC940 Stampless PAID cover with a partial strike of the Goldsborough NC CDS 10 SEP (1862) with handstamp PAID 10 Type C. Coarse brown paper cover, which appears to be homemade, addressed to C. H. Brogden Esq, Raleigh NC. Receiving docking at the right "Wayne County Bond Clerk County Court Rec'd Sept 10, 1862." Interesting that the cover was received the same day that it was posted when Goldsborough and Raleigh are about 55 miles apart suggesting that the cover most likely went by railroad as Goldsborough was an important railroad junction at the time. Very clean cover.

Curtis Hooks Brogden (1819-1901) was a prominent North Carolina politician and served in a number of state offices beginning with the NC State House of Representatives (1840-1850). At the time of this cover, he was serving as the Comptroller of the State of North Carolina. Later he served in the NC State Senate (1868), as the Lt Governor (1872), and as the 42nd Governor (1874-1877). He served in the US Congress (1877-1879) and in the NC State House of Representatives (1886-1888). He had a full career.
