Stampless PAID cover with manuscript postal marking at the left "Martindale
NC June 30th (1864) Paid 10." Military Address to Thos M. Carr Jr.,
Goldsboro NC, Second Battalion Co A, Care of Capt Overman. At the
top of the top back flap is a light pencil notation which appears to be
period and relates to the original contents which are no longer with
the cover "The Yanks have stopped at Morganton NC R.M.M." Some period staining at the left, otherwise a clean presentable appearance.
Thomas Milton Carr Jr (1845-1923) of Charlotte NC is listed as a private in Co B of the 2nd Batt NC Jr Reserves.
"Co A" in the address is therefore incorrect and should be "Co B." The
unit was in service for 6 months from June 1864 to Dec 1864 assigned to
the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. That would date
this cover to June 1864. From the correpondence, the cover is from Pvt
Carr's father, Dr Thomas Milton Carr Sr. The last name is also
sometimes spelled as "Kerr."
William H. Overman (1846-1901) served as Capt of Co B 2nd Batt NC Jr Reserves (also known as the 71st NC Inf).
"Jr" refers to the fact that the unit was composed mainly of newly
conscripted 17 year olds in 1864 and meant only to remain within the
state as guards and not to engage in combat. William H. Overman is
listed as a merchant in Salisbury NC on the Federal Census of 1880. |
