Ex-Kaufmann, First Use (inside) - Handcarried outside the postal system (not dated) most likely by military courier as the address is military to Capn W. F. Nance, a. a. g. (Assistant Adjutant General), Charleston SC. Second Use (outside) - Stampless Soldiers DUE with the Goldsborough NC CDS 21 MAY and handstamp DUE 10 Type E. Addressed to Mrs. J. Adger Smythe, Wrights Bluff, Clarendon District, So. Ca. Endorsed at upper right "J. Adger Smythe 25th Regt SCV." Captain William F. Nance (1836-1881), a graduate of the South Carolina Military Academy, was a staff officer and AAG on the staff of CSA Brig-Gen States Rights Gist beginning in August 1862. He also served on the staffs of several other generals during the war and held at one time the rank of Major. After the war, he engaged in the insurance business in Newberry SC. Gen Gist was in South Carolina mid-1862 into 1863. CSA Brig-Gen States Rights Gist (1831-1864) was killed leading a charge at the Battle of Franklin (Ten) 11/30/1864. James Adger Smyth(e) (1837-1920), a hardware clerk in Charleston according to the Federal Census of 1860, entered service as a Quartermaster Sergeant in the 25th SC Inf 7/1/1862. This and the first use would date the Goldsborough use to MAY 1863. After the war, he returned to Charleston and entered business. He is listed as a "Cotton Factor" on the Federal Census of 1880. The cover is addressed to his wife. |
