The 50th NC Inf was
actually assigned to the Department of North Carolina and Southern
Virginia although did take part in the Battle of Mavern Hill and the
Seven Days Battles in Virginia in 1862. And then spent the remainder of
the war basically in North Carolina but was not attached to
Kirkland's Brigade unitil March 1865. Goldsborough was occupied by the
Federals 3/21/1865, and the post office was closed at that time.
Raleigh was not occupied until 4/13/1865.That would date this cover to
March 1865 most likely the last week of the month. This cover is believed to be the last CSA cover directed to Goldsborough. The
regiment took part in the Battle of Bentonville (NC) 19-21 MAR 1865 and
surrendered with Gen Joseph E. Johnston's Army at Durham Station NC
4/26/1865.
The commander of Co B was Capt E. C. Atkinson who
was captured as a POW 3/11/1865 and not released until 6/17/1865 from
Johnson's Island. It is not recorded who commanded the company after
Capt Akinson's capture. |
