(margin just in at bottom right) tied by the small double circle
BLUE Raleigh NC CDS with an 1862 date. Coarse brown paper
cover with a Military Address to Mr. C. C. Durham, Swels
(Sewell's) Point near Norfolk, Va, 2 Regiment NC. Missing
bottom back flap where opened, reduced somewhat at the bottom,
and wear at the bottom right corner. Still quite a presentabe
cover with a plated Stone 3 stamp.
The unit in the address is the 12th NC Inf
(formerly the 2nd NC Volunteers). The unit
was assigned to the Department of Norfolk October 1861 - April 1862.
Sewell's Point was a small peninsula of land in Norfolk and was never a
CSA post office location. Charles Crawford Durham (1814-1897), a
successful farmer from Cleveland NC, enlisted as a private in
Co E 12th NC Inf 4/22/1861 and was discharged
5/3/1862 for being overage. After his brief enlistment, he returned
home to continue farming. |
