NC929 CSA #4 Horz Pair Stone 2 Position 39-40 (margin just in at the bottom at tight on the left side) with very faint evidence of an unidentified blue postmark. From the well-known Little Correspondence with Military Address to Capt B. F. Little, Co E 52 Regt NC Troops Care Col Marshall, Richmond, Virginia. The cover from Capt Little's wife would have originated in North Carolina. Period notation at the left "contains little Jennie's hair --." Clean cover Ex-Matz.

Benjamin Franklin Little (1830-1879), a dry goods merchant from a wealthy NC planter family, began service as Capt of Co E 52nd NC Inf 4/8/1862. Capt Little was promoted Lt Col of the regiment at Gettysberg. The 52nd NC Inf was involved in Pickett's Charge on the third day of Gettysburg and suffered 30% casualties including Lt Col Little who was wounded and captured as a POW on the battlefield. He was a POW until later exchanged and then resigned from the army in AUG 1864 because of his wounds which resulted in the loss of an arm. "Jennie" in the docketing was his infant daughter Jennie Flax Little (1862-1865).

Col Marshall mentioned in the address was James Keith Marshall (1839-1863), an 1860 VMI graduate, Killed-in-Action leading his regiment at Gettysburg (Pickett's Charge) 7/3/1863.
