#4 Horz Pair (possibly Stone 3 but not plated) (margin touches at top
right and bottom left corner) pen-cancelled and matching manuscript "Leaksville NC Aug 21 (1863)." Light coarse paper cover with full Military
Address to Lieut W. S. Martin, Company F, 45th Regiment NC Troops,
Daniel's Brigade, Gen D. H. Hill's Division, Petersburg, Va. Cover with a little edge wear. Small repair to the right lower corner.
The roster of the 45th NC Inf lists
a William S. Martin (1833-1906) in Co F who is described as a
Quartermaster Sergeant and not as a commissioned Lieutenant. His home
was Leaksville NC. Very likely the cover is from a relative back home
who sent the cover and thought he was a Lieutenant and did not know he
was a Quartermaster Sergeant. Sergt Martin enlisted 4/5/1862 and
surrendered with his unit at Appomattox 4/9/1865. On the Census of
1860, he is listed as a Medical Student. He must have finished his
studies after the war as the Census of 1880 lists him as a physician
practicing in Leaksville. |
