NC925 Stampless PAID cover with the small double circle Fayetteville NC CDS 15 FEB (1865) and handstamp PAID 10 Type B. Coarse brown paper cover which appears to be homemade with Military Address to Capt T. W. Harris, 5th NC Cavalry, Hicksford, Va. Very clean cover.

Thomas West Harris (1839-1888) entered service as Capt of Co E 5th NC Cav 8/3/1862 and served throughout the war and sustained at least two or perhaps three wounds. He had prior service as a Sergt in Co I 32nd NC Inf. An 1859 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Capt Harris went to France immediately after the war to study surgery and anatomy. He returned from France and obtained an MD degree from New York University in 1868. He was a well respected physician and surgeon in North Carolina and was the first dean of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

This cover dates to FEB 1865 late in the war as Brig-Gen Rufus Barringer's Brigade was attached to Maj-Gen FitzHugh Lee's Cavalry Division ANV April 1864 - April 1865. In February 1864, the 5th NC Cav was in North Carolina and Brig-Gen Barringer did not achieve brigade command until June 1864. Excellent 1865 postal use.
